Why is sustainability a good thing?
Sustainability is incredibly important to the future of our planet and our families. At Galaxy, we know it’s important that we are responsible towards the environment and to help grow the local economies and communities of the cocoa farmers in Cotes D’Ivoire, West Africa where we source our cocoa from. So, to make sure we can all keep indulging in Galaxy chocolate for generations to come, we need to farm and source our cocoa sustainably.
Why focus on cocoa?
Cocoa is not only the main ingredient in our creamy smooth chocolate at Galaxy but cocoa farming is also the area where we feel we can have the greatest impact on both the environment and on the local community. We source our cocoa from hundreds of small, independent cocoa farms that have farmed cocoa trees for generations. Because of the high demands for cocoa across the globe, the focus for these farmers has always been on how to keep supplies as high as possible and this has led to damage of the precious rainforest in the area, which has a knock on effect to the environment and wildlife. Just as importantly, the re-growth of the cocoa trees has also been damaged, meaning that farmers are struggling to keep up the yields from their crops, which then leads to reduced income to the farm and harms the local communities.
We have to help these farmers learn new farming techniques that protect the environment and will improve the growth of the cocoa bean trees. This will mean the local farmers will be able to produce and sell more cocoa sustainably, which will help the farm, the community and its environment and the local economy now and in the future.
And we, at home, can enjoy Galaxy chocolate, knowing it’s doing the right thing.
